OK, this isn't exactly what your asking but same band anyway... :)
When I was in college we would shop at a store called Ragstock once
in a while. I have no idea if it's a national store or not. Anyway,
they sell used clothing and it was always a "hip" kinda place back
in the day. Thus, perfect for a broke college kid. So I recall
shopping there one day and this music came on unlike anything I'd
ever heard. It was Talking Heads "More Songs About Buildings and
Food". Naturally, I had heard of punk and knew a bit about it. I
believe I had Costello's first album and maybe more. But, these
grabbed me in a whole new kind of peculiar way. The manic feel and
crazed chirpy vocals. I raced out and bought the album as soon as I
left the store. I really love the first four TH albums but to me
MSABF remains the zennith in their career. And a moment that really
plunged me into a new type of music.
I know I've had true record store experiences that have opened my
ears to new music but this store experience is the one that stands
out.
Also, not quite on topic... Last week-end we ate lunch at a cafe
inside the Walker Art Center. They had this music on in the
background while we ate. I asked the woman behind the counter who
this was playing and she let me know it was by a group called The
Clientele. Now, it was somewhat hard to hear but it really caught my
ear. My guess is they may have been discussed here before but new to
my world.
I'll be checking them out as soon as my fresh batch of emusic
downloads comes up.
