Two notables come to mind for me:

    (1) Summer 1986, while still coming into my own musically, I heard some
super catchy pop start playing at Zia Records in Phoenix (16th Street, IIR)
and had to ask what it was. First time I had ever heard of (the) Shoes.
Been a fan ever since.

    (2) 1994 (I think) at a Circuit City, believe it or not. I heard
Sparky's Dream playing over the sound system in the CD department and again,
had to ask what was playing (Grand Prix had just come out). The vocals were
familiar, but I could not place it at the time and it had been a while since
I had listened to Bandwagonesque (which was my first exposure to TFC).
