I was in Bow Wow Records in Albuquerque at some point in the summer of 
'94, when the in-store PA started playing "When You Were My Baby" by 
the Magnetic Fields.  The CD, the two-fer of DISTANT PLASTIC TREES/THE 
WAYWARD BUS, had only just come in as a trade-in, and I made the 
manager take it off after the first song so I could buy it.  That was 
my introduction to Stephin Merritt in general, which steered a lot of 
my tastes for the rest of the '90s.
