Just played David Mead's MINE AND YOURS, which closes with "Only In The
Movies." Man, what a great sad song.

There aren't a lot of great sad pop songs, at least in my experience. I'm
not talking about the mawkish tearjerkers (Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey") or the
outrageously corny ones (Terry Jacks' "Seasons In The Sun".) I'm talking
about songs that portray genuine melancholy, regret and/or the pain of loss,
delivered in a fashion that doesn't cheapen or betray honest emotion
(Sinatra's "In The Wee Small Hours.") That's a tough distinction to make, I
know; where does Clapton's "Tears In Heaven" fit on that spectrum?

Stylistically speaking, my favorite sad songs tend to be as hushed and
subtle as Mead's "Movies," though I acknowledge that good sad songs can be
as operatic as Nilsson's "Without You."

What are some other great sad pop songs?
