Interesting comments re: the Police. What's interesting is that after years in the desert, I've noticed young bands starting to cover them again, just like when I was in college. Things have come full circle.
Good comments also re: Sting's songwriting. To me, their albums always suffered from the fact that they were obviously too busy touring (at least for the first four albums) to really come up with songs...most of their songs were really catchy riffs, with the main exception being the first album, which is pretty solid.
That said, their musicianship is first rate -- arrangement-wise, possibly the most inventive three piece rock band of all time -- and Sting's best songwriting is phenomenal. "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" is, IMHO, one of the finest pop singles ever recorded. Pure exuberant joy, and the video of them bouncing around the control room of a studio just accentuates that feeling. The one time I saw them, in '83, I was disappointed that they did not play it.
To me, the second best Police album is KLARK KENT -- the Stewart Copeland solo record that came out around '79. Deadpan vocals and loopy musicianship around a fine bunch of offhand, smart-ass songs and Ridgway-esque quirky instrumentals.
