The Scruff`s got their start in the same fertile Memphis soil as Big
Star back in `77, earning accolades for their pristine power-pop upon
the release of Wanna Meet The Scruff`s?. They relocated to New York City
for three years in hopes of catching their big break, but eventually
returned to Memphis - where the band essentially became a sole
proprietorship for leader Stephen Burns. Burns continued to write and
record over the next few years, ultimately releasing those songs as the
well-received Midtown album before relocating to Glasgow in `98. There
he recorded two albums with members of Teenage Fanclub and Belle and
Sebastian, Love, The Scruffs, and Swingin` Singles. Burns is back in the
States these days, with a stellar new album recorded with his
now-permanent band in Glasgow`s CaVa Studios and mixed at legendary
Ardent Studios in Memphis. The record is a must for any pop music fan
who wants jangling guitars, driving bass, stunning melodies and soaring
vocals and orchestration. (Scruffville)
