I liked your list. I really don't want to worry over what's underground/indie and what's not, so here's my top 20 of the '80s, regardless of whether they sold a million or a hundred. Actually I'll take it to 21 in case anyone's going to get tweaked about LONDON CALLING being released outside the U.S. in mid-December 1979.

1) The Clash - Sandinista!
2) The Clash - London Calling
3) Robyn Hitchcock - I Often Dream of Trains
4) Wire - A Bell Is a Cup Until It Is Struck
5) XTC - Black Sea
6) Wire - 154
7) Jason & the Scorchers - Lost and Found
8) The Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight
9) Kate Bush - Hounds of Love
10) Shriekback - Oil and Gold
11) REM - Document
12) Game Theory - Lolita Nation
13) Midnight Oil - Red Sails in the Sunset
14) Talking Heads - Speaking in Tongues
15) REM - Lifes Rich Pageant
16) Prince - Parade
17) Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska
18) Elvis Costello - Get Happy!!
19) REM - Murmur
20) Peter Gabriel - Security
21) X - Wild Gift

later,

Miles
