I've always loved the '60s Kinks, and I've long had the various hits collections from each label they were on after that. A few years ago, though, I wanted more Kinks to listen to, and I decided to listen to every Kinks album in the order they came out, for about a week at a time. I knew there were some dreadful songs in the '70s and '80s, but I also knew there were good songs tucked away on the same records. The hope was that I'd find more unheralded gems. And I did.

My own favorite of the post-"Muswell" albums is probably "Misfits." But I found at least a couple of songs to love on each album. The batting average may not have been that great overall, but I was willing to do the digging. It helped that I scored the RCA and Arista reissues for really cheap clearance prices, and most of the MCA (and later) stuff was available at Half.com for cheap too.

If you're looking for an album to knock your socks off like "Village Green Preservation Society" or "Something Else," you won't find it. But if you're willing to wade through some lesser albums for some great songs, you'll find them. I always meant to compile a CD-R of my favorites, but I never got around to it.

  Randy
