...I realize what a can 'o worms this one might open... but being that I'm such a BIG Beatles fan I just had to throw in two bits concerning The Smithereens' "Meet The Smithereens" Beatles' tribute CD...
...A few short points, I believe, are in order:
1) It takes a lot of confidence to cover an entire Bealtes' album, let alone an all-time classic one such as Meet The Beatles from beginning to end... 2) Your risk will either fall in one of two extremes; It will either turn out suprisingly good or you'll be hounded by tons of reviews that ask: Why the heck did these guys even attempt this?... 3) The hard core Smithereens fans will, as expected, rave... everyone else will take sides with point #2... No middle ground here
So, that said... and only based on the MP3 samples I heard on NotLame, my initial gut feeling is... they should have passed on this one... I don't see myself purchasing it... this coming from a guy who has every wanna-be JPG&R album including every Fab Four CD, 1964's 3 CD's, Beatnix and yes, even the infamous "The Buggs-Beetle Beat" (remember that one?) from way back in the 60's...
I like and respect the Smithereens but what I heard sounded a bit lackluster to my ears... As I said... the can of worms has been opened as it usually happens when an opinion is offered... But just felt I had to get it out of my system...
Cheers,
Miguel
