From "Huseman, Matt" <Matt.Huseman@phh.com>
Subject Paula Kelley and the Case of the Lisa Loeb Look-alike
Date Thu, 25 Jan 2007 11:34:56 -0500

Paula says: "Being a female musician who also happens to wear glasses, I
can't tell you how many times I've gotten the Loeb comparison simply
based on my spectacles. Our music is nothing alike. I'm also a friend of
Kay's. Both she and I wear glasses because we need corrective lenses,
not because we want to look like another person who wears glasses."

Paula... c'mon! You're a vet of the industry and a friend of Kay's and
you are making a big deal about these comments? I know Kay from back
before either of our bands were signed. Hell, I ostensibly wrote the GBW
song "Supergeek" about her. I had no idea what she was up to, but I went
to her website after the link was sent. Did you read her missive in the
news section? http://www.kayhanley.com/news/message.html

I'm not saying I understand half of what she wrote, nor do I totally
agree with the parts that actually make sense. But it seems to me that
Kay's reaction would be... who cares? She, of all people, understands
that any press is good press. By the way, I wear geeky glasses because
I'm frigging blind and Rob has no qualms about mocking me for it. He's
good people.

"And to the person who says he only buys Lisa Loeb's records to look at
her, not because he likes the music: This just depresses me."

Hunh? You're telling me that if you found out that half of the albums
you sold were because guys liked your looks that would somehow lessen
the experience for you? I understand that as a musician our ultimate
fantasy is that everyone buys our stuff because they are completely
moved and think we're geniuses, but it's a business. If my albums sell
because they make good drink coasters then so be it.

"This just proves that, still, women are not always taken seriously as
musicians. Looks are still such an important factor, and it's really
unfortunate"

Fortunately, this only applies to women... and then only in the music
industry. Insert tounge wagging emoticon here.

All joking aside, you're entitled to your opinion. Although I'm not
familiar with your work I'm sure you are very sincere in what you do. I
just think that getting mad about this kind of stuff is going to make
you crazy. Trust me. I've been there.
