Leduc writes:
Peter Case , formerly of L.A. power pop group The Plimsouls , has been
releasing his own albums since 1986. In spring of 2001, he compiled a
tribute to hero Mississippi John Hurt called Avalon Blues , featuring
contributions from Lucinda Williams, Dave Alvin, and Steve Earle. It was
nominated for a Grammy in the Best Traditional Folk category. Hear Peter
Case live in Studio 1A Wednesday, January 24 at 2:00 p.m. on Music with Jay
Trachtenberg before his appearance at the Continental Club Wednesday night
with Dwight Twilley as part of a fundraiser for bassist Ron Flynt.
While I usually hate tribute albums, four of my favorites involve Peter
Case: HighTone's Dave Alvin/Tom Russell-produced Tulare Dust tribute to Merle
Haggard; Avalon Blues; 1990's This Ain't the Plimsouls; and last year's
three-disc A Case for Case tribute to Peter. When the Plimsouls broke up, I was
pretty upset. Looking back, I'm happy Peter went on to make the solo music he did.
That said, the Plimsouls show I saw in Nashville back in June was a definite
thrill.
Why the fundraiser for Ron Flynt?
