And it's offensive that such things do happen....very often (four
entertainment magazines in this city alone have it as unofficial policy).
But rather than gripe about it I've come to realize that it's easier to ask
"how much?" and do what's best for my label and the acts on it...and that is
to advertise in exchange for coverage if need be...cause without it we are
dead in the water.
The Toronto Sun and The Toronto Star have "honourariums" in return for
placement of product in lieu of advertising...especially when co-opted with
a third party. For instance...if I have a CD release party, the paper will
send a reporter to cover it *if* I pay for the club's advertisement for the
show. Radio works like this on occasion too....they'll do a live remote and
yack about the event on the air if we pay for the talent to attend (money
which I doubt actually goes in the pocket of the talent).
