Hello all,
Somehow I managed to purchase a lot of music released in 2006 and had
the happy task of winnowing it down to a top 20. I cheated a little by
adding a top 10 vinyl list! Anyway, here's what I liked in 2006:

1) Wisely - Parador (Not Lame)
2) The Format - Dog Problems (The Vanity Label)
3) Damone - Out Here All Night (Island)
4) The Feeling - Twelve Stops and Home (Universal)
5) Chris Brown - Now That You're Fed (self released)
6) The Now People - The Last Great 20th Century Love Affair (Bird Song)
7) Marty Rudnick - More Songs About Cars & Girls (Sandbox) (produced by
the amazingly nice guy, Michael Carpenter)
8) Hem - Funnel Cloud (Waveland)
9) The Nines - Calling Distant Stations (T.A.S. Gold)
10) Roger Joseph Manning, Jr - The Land of Pure Imagination (w/3 song
EP) (Cordless)
11) Monkeeman - s/t (El Muto)
12) Parallax Project - Perpetual Limbo (Tallboy)
13) Jenny Lewis & the Watson Twins - Rabbit Fur Coat (Team Love)
14) Dixie Chicks - Taking the Long Way (Open Wide)
15) Willie Nile - Streets of New York (2:59)
16) Michael Franti & Spearhead - Yell Fire! (Anti-)
17) The Charms - Strange Magic (Wicked Cool)
18) World Record - Guitars Forever (Tallboy)
19) Sparks - Hello Young Lovers (In the Red)
20) Be Your Own Pet - s/t (Ecstatic Peace)

And for the "old school", the following is my Top 10 releases I bought
on VINYL!
1) Jenny Lewis & the Watson Twins - Rabbit Fur Coat (Team Love)
2) Sparks - Hello Young Lovers (on beautiful WHITE vinyl) (In the Red)
3) Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am... (Domino)
4) Guillemots - From the Cliffs (double 10" vinyl!) (Fantastic Plastic)
5) Mojave 3 - Puzzles Like You (4AD)
6) Josh Rouse - Subtitulo (Bedroom)
7) The Living End - State of Emergency (Adeline)
8) Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones (Interscope)
9) Jennifer O'Connor - Over the Mountains, Across the Valley...
(Matador)
10) My Brightest Diamond - Bring Me the Workhorse (Asthmatic Kitty)

Favorite CD's I purchased from bands that I saw at the Boston IPO 2006:
Kickbacks - Motel Stars (Peeled Label)
Minky Starshine & the New Cardinals - Hooray for L.A. (produced by Ken
Stringfellow!) (Lovestruck)
The Cautions - Proceed with... (self released)
The Fadeouts - s/t (Naked Ear)
Coley - Crossing the Rubicon (Gamer)
Naomi Star - Sunshine Girl (Pleiades)

Guilty Pleasure: Pink - I'm Not Dead (especially "Leave Me Alone (I'm
Lonely)" produced by Butch Walker!)

Favorite CD's from years before 2006 that I finally heard in 2006:
James Guffie - So Much for Secrets (Guflain)
Wheat - Per Second, Per Second...Every Second (Aware)
The Bigger Lovers - Honey in the Hive (Yep Roc)
Butterfly 9 - s/t (m/f vocals with Michael Carpenter on drums!) (GCG)

Favorite songs not on any of the above:
P Hux - "Dozers Away" (from "Mile High Fan " (Not Lame))
David Mead - "Chatterbox" (from "Tangerine" (Tallulah))

Looking forward to the 10th anniversary of IPO in Los Angeles - anyone
else planning on going and staying at the Orchid Suites?

And I'm looking forward to much more great music in 2007 (and lots from
previous years that I have not yet had the pleasure to hear!)

Pop on!
John
