I'm gonna start off defending "Low Budget" - I love
this album (but it also came out when I was at an
influential age and was discovering FM Radio). The
songs (unfortunately) still apply to our current
events ("A Gallon Of Gas", "Low Budget", "Catch Me Now
I'm Falling")...When I saw Ray at the Austin City
Limits TV taping this year, he played a couple from
"Low Budget".
Above that, "Arthur", "Village Green", & "Muswell
Hillbillies" are essential - definitely worth going
away from E-Music to pick up the first two.
"Come Dancing" is a Greatest Hits that touches on "Low
Budget" thru "State Of Confusion" / "Give The People
What They Want" (MTV era Kinks). Not a bad
collection, but missing key album tracks. ditto for
"Kinks' Greatest: Celluloid Heroes" or those "Limited
Edition" Compilations (Are these eMusic only comps?
I've never seen them elsewhere...and if so, where's
Vol 1?)
Give The People What They Want has the hits in the
Come Dancing collection ("Destroyer" "Better Things")
and other greats such as "Around The Dial" "Yo-Yo" &
"Art Lover" - I could recommend this one as a whole.
"Sitting In The Midday Sun" from "Preservation Act 1"
is up there with "Sunny Afternoon." I think in
general, Preservation Act 1 & 2 are what people are
referring to when they say The Kinks had lost it for
awhile.
