I must be in curmudgeon mode, and I don't mean to be, so please forgive me, but I have to say this because if I don't my head will explode.
We all have our favourites...and I mean real favourites, not stuff we like because we A: Know the artist, or B: found something no one else has mentioned, I mean the stuff that actually reaches us and makes us ask the time worn question, "WTF is this group/artist/guy/doorknob doing so far under the radar? Why doesn't this group/artist/guy/doorknob have a number one record, a career, and the adoration of millions, not just 278 people on an obscure email list. So, as much as I've enjoyed(!) reading everyone's 'best of 2006 lists', I'd rather the subject changed slightly to this: Who, in your opinion, should have a career/hit/respect from the general public. Oh sure, they don't know their asses from an iPod, but seiously, who do we all talk about that REALLY is good enough to hit the target?
No offense, but I think the kind of music we love would be better served if we raised the bar a bit, and actually promoted by word of mouth that won't embarrass us if they DO breakthrough.
Happy New Year everybody, and just so you know...keep an ear out for:
The Bicycles
Marianas Trench
Kyle Riabko
Jamie Dart
The Golden Dogs
The Trews
Feist
Fear Zero
Jaimie Vernon
Me
...I could go on, but I won't...out of respect for all of you.
