I'm sure one of the Ontario folks will chime in, but "Peterborough and
the Kawarthas" refers to a region of south-central Ontario where
there's a series of freshwater lakes, part of what Canadians tend to
call "cottage country." It's where you go for a weekend or a summer
out of the city.
It's a terrific song, easily the best Jim has ever done. Just a nice
catchy tune and an overall gentle, wistful vibe that I like.
Personally, my most favorite song of the whole new lot is "Fun and
Games," which will be on BNL ARE MEN (it's also on the two-disc
version of ARE ME, which doesn't quite have all the songs from the
sessions), but my favorite on the album proper is probably Ed's "Bank
Job," which is both exceedingly pretty and one of the better lyrics on
the album: it's lind of like one of Donald Westlake's Dortmunder
novels set to music. Overall, however, this is easily my favorite BNL
album since GORDON. I'm sorry I missed their Boston concert in
November, but it happened at a point where I was just too skint to
afford two tickets.
