Ok - Since Michael called people out on the Hold
Steady (one of my favs of the year), I'm calling y'all
out on "Matthew Sweet/Susanna Hoffs - UNDER THE
COVERS, vol. 1"

Now, maybe I'm put off by the lackluster performance I
saw at The Dog & Duck over SXSW. - but I think it has
more to do with the song selection...could it be any
more obvious? Almost as obvious and worn out as the
album title. Hearing Matt do TWO Neil Young song just
makes me want to listen to Neil. I guess you have to
do a Dylan, a Who and a Beatles cover on something
like this...but Bob has something like 700 songs to
choose from, ditto for The Who (maybe not 700) and I'd
rather hear one of those Beatles songs that they gave
away. Calexico did a better version of "Alone Again
Or" - Material Issue did a better version of "Run To
Me" - Lemonheads did a better version of "Different
Drum" - No one should cover The Zombies anymore (Face
it, you can't come close).

I guess I would expect more hidden gems from the two
of them - Granted, they sound great...just
unnecessary.

Top Cover Albums of 2006 (the year cover albums
replaced tribute albums)
1. The Methodones - 21st Century Power Pop Riot
(Anyone who pulls out a Crash Street Kids cover...or
for that matter an Off Broadway cover is tops in my
book - Even if "He's A Whore" has been done to death)

2. Grant Lee Phillips - Nineteeneighties
(Ok - This is the music I grew up on, so I'm loving
the reworkings)

3. The Beatles - Love
(Pretty cool - Falls dangerously close to Stars On 45
territory - I won't consider this a new album, since
it's really just a Mash-Up)

4. Nouvelle Vague - Bande A Part
(ditto to GLP, except they're kind of retreading the
same ground as their last release and where, if
anywhere, do they plan to go with this?)

5. Me First And The Gimme Gimmes - Love Their County
(These guys at least take a different theme for each
release and delve deep into said theme's catalog)

6. Matt & Sue's provocatively named cover album
