In addition to the Semisonic book, Jen Trynin's book,
'Everything I'm Cracked Up to Be,' is a pretty good
look at music biz sausage-making, and demonstrates the
additional difficulties women in rock still have (she
was coming up at the same time as Alanis Morrissette,
and there are many horrifying examples of the
"impossibility" of having two young women rockers
around at the same time).

And as for the pop of the last fifteen years, in
addition to the acts already listed, I'd throw in the
many Elephant 6 bands and their ilk, like:

Olivia Tremor Control
Beulah
Apples in Stereo
Elf Power
The Minders
Of Montreal
Essex Green

Plenty of pop, perhaps not so much "power."

Actually Neutral Milk Hotel was by far my favorite of
the E6 batch, but they were the least "pop" of all.

And overall, Teenage Fanclub sits high atop my list of
the best pure power pop of the last 15 years.
