I've always meant to do this, so I thought that as a kind of prelude
to my Best of 2006 list, I'd revisit 2005 and see how much my list
changed, both from new albums I hadn't heard this time last year and
from how my choices had worn over a year. Turns out that both lists
had the same #1 but were otherwise hugely different: only about half
of my original list is on this one, between albums I discovered this
year (Russian Futurists, Sparrow, etc.) and albums I'd either upgraded
or downgraded after a year's reflection. So, my favorites of 2005, as
always with my favorite song after:
1. The Decemberists -- Picaresque (Kill Rock Stars) ("The Sporting
Life")
2. Half Man Half Biscuit -- Achtung Bono (Probe Plus) ("We Built This
Village On A Trad. Arr. Tune")
3. A Hawk and a Hacksaw -- Darkness At Noon (Leaf) ("Pastelka on the
Train")
4. The Coral -- The Invisible Invasion (Deltasonic) ("In the Morning")
5. Sylvie Lewis -- Tangos and Tantrums (Cheap Lullaby) ("Promises of
Paris")
6. The New Pornographers -- Twin Cinema (Matador) ("Twin Cinema")
7. Sparrow -- The Early Years (Absolutely Kosher) ("This Is How It's
Done")
8. Metric -- Live It Out (Last Gang) ("Patriarch on a Vespa")
9. The Russian Futurists -- Our Thickness (Upper Class) ("Paul Simon")
10. Saint Etienne -- Tales From Turnpike House (Sanctuary) ("Side
Streets")
11. The Get Quick -- How the Story Goes (Rainbow Quartz) ("Blaue
Reiter")
12. Michael Penn -- Mr. Hollywood Jr., 1947 (Mimeograph) ("Walter
Reed")
13. Deerhoof -- Green Cosmos (5 Rue Christine) ("Koneko Kitten")
14. Vav Jungle -- Canadiana Striptease (Creamy Bass) ("Fake Fur Pile")
15. Spain Colored Orange -- Hopelessly Incapable Of Standing In The
Way (Lucid) ("Maybe It's True")
16. Natasha Bedingfield -- Unwritten (Epic) ("These Words")
17. Broken Social Scene -- Broken Social Scene (Arts and Crafts)
("Major Label Debut")
18. Piney Gir -- Peakahokahoo (Greyday) ("Boston")
19. Kate Bush -- Aerial (Columbia) ("Pi")
20. Art Brut -- Bang Bang Rock and Roll (Fierce Panda) ("Formed A
Band")
