My favorite record this year was a late arrival:
Peter, Bjorn, and John's 'Writer's Block.' It's a
great big, fuzzy, indie guitar pop record from Sweden
that effectively incorporates very organic sounding
beats here and there as well. You hear some shoegaze,
some new wave, some 90's indie, some Wall of Sound --
and there's nothing wrong with any of that. 'Writer's
Block' seems like a timeless album to me, and manages,
against all odds, to come off as both charming AND
hip.

And since I tend never to hit this category, a handful
of favorite singles:

1. Once & Never Again - The Long Blondes -- I just got
the Long Blondes' debut full-length, and I haven't
spent enough time with it to know if it will end up in
my top 20, but this song may have been my favorite of
the year -- an incredibly infectious three minute rush
of adreneline that kicks off with the chorus:
"Nineteen! You're only nineteen for god's sake! You
don't need a boyfriend!" I prefer the single version
to the rerecorded and slightly toned-down album
version.

2. Wolf Like Me - TV On the Radio -- The album
'Return to Cookie Mountain' is showing up on many year
end best-of lists, but I found it pretty boring, with
the exception of this outstanding, highly intense
track. A great, driving, rock song with an ominous
undertone. Makes you want to run really fast...maybe
because you want to, and maybe because you HAVE to.

3. Send Her Back - Montt Mardie -- Another Swedish
artist, this one-man band's releases aren't available
in the US, and his website has been under construction
for quite awhile now, but you can hear some tracks on
his myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/monttmardie).
This one is my favorite by far, showing a true love
of Brian Wilson as well as late 50's/early 60's pop
(and reverb). Pure and true and sweet (although other
tracks show a surprising lyrical bite), with quite a
falsetto.
