The Ordinary Boys - How to Get Everything You Ever Wanted in Ten Easy Steps

Although this is their third album in as many years, this is probably the
moment where the Ordinary Boys established a true identity apart from their
influences. For those who haven't been paying attention, The Ordinary Boys
are a british foursome heavily indebted to late 1970s mod-punk and ska, with
very heavy Jam, Madness, and Specials influences. There's also a strong
undercurrent of 80s and 90s britpop, notably The Smiths, Blur, and Idlewild.
There are even a pair of Beach Boys homages on the new record. "How To Get
Everything..." finds them dropping many of their retro trappings in favor of
a modern, more dancefloor-friendly sound. The Lady Sovereign duet really
drives it home, but across the board this sounds like a platter of some of
the best British ska-punk-mod singles you never heard, all in one place.
This is a very audities-friendly record, with some first-rate power pop like
"The Great Big Rip Off," "Lonely At the Top," and "I Luv U." Their third
fantastic record in a row, in as many years. --J
