i'm reasonably sure the purest, most successful two-hit wonder of all
time is tone loc, who came from nowhere, had two equally huge mega-hits,
and then quickly returned to nowhere. "wild thing" hit #2 (in the US).
"funky cold medina" hit #3 a few months later. and that was that. (ok,
technically there was a third single, "all through the night," a couple
years later, which barely scraped the top 100 and which no one actually
heard and no one could possibly remember, and therefore it doesn't
count.) also, both hits were stupendously great, which should count for
something.
