I was following British music when all those Scott Walker albums came out
and I remember the stir they caused.First of all the Walker Brothers were
massive in England, and those fans are very loyal. So I think his solo success
was a combination of that loyalty and the fact that no one was doing
anything like him at all.It was mind blowing to hear his over the top
melodrama in that deep voice. And the material was chosen carefully.I remeber
when "Jackie" was released as a single. The NME was going nuts over this
song. His Jacques Brel choices were well received .He intoduced a lot of
people to songs they would have never heard.
And you are entirely correct about the influence he had on future
singers.John Foxx is a great example.
By the way,"No Regrets" was an old Tom Rush song. And he may have got it from
someone else.His version is great.
