To each his own indeed. I think it's like smells. Some people can love a
certain smell whereas it'll make someone else gag.

I downloaded the Newsom last night on the basis that Van Dyke Parks and
Steve Albini being involved in the same record had to be interesting plus I
had read all the positive reviews. And you know I really don't have a
problem with her vocals at all, they sound fine to me. I've only listened to
3 tracks of the 5 and I could see that the length of the compositions may
become tiring quickly especially since there is no dramatic shifts of tempo
or tone within them. I'm hoping that there are more subtle changes going on
that I'll pick up on during repeat plays.

I was suspicious of the strong reviews thinking it would be like the Scott
Walker record. I don't believe that most of the reviewers had any context in
which to judge it, but it's *Scott Walker* and he hasn't released a record
in years so therefore we'll give it top marks.I did see a review of his
earlier album Tilt where it was given '10 or 0, who can tell'. At least that
was being honest. I wonder how many of those reviewers who gave it full
marks are still listening to it or are including it in their best of year
lists? Having heard (most of) Ys now, it's really not that off the wall, not
compared to the Walker anyway so I'm willing to accept the high reviews at
face value.
