<<<Speaking of more strictly powerpop oriented stuff, The Feeling released a marvelous debut album in the ELO/Jellyfish/Crowded House vein that should really be checked out. A must for anyone who is still mainly interested in the classic pop style.

Now there's a name that is truly a blast from the past! The "Feeling" CD sounds very interesting; I'll have to check that one out!

I have The Nines and Winnerys on my "must ck out" list... and I didn't know that Nina Gordon had a new CD out. Looks like I haven't missed anything, tho. Shame, I liked her earlier solo CD, it was the Aimee Mann CD I've been wishing Aimee would get back to before the constantly low key morose Aimee took over the occasionally upbeat and more balanced Aimee.
And if any of you haven't heard the Roger Manning Jr CD, well, what are you waiting for? It's at the top of my 2006 list. (granted, it's a short list, I've only heard about 15-20 CDs from 06 so far!) Anyhows, LofPI is totally fab. And am I the only one who thinks that it's perhaps the best thing he's ever done, including Jellyfish? Of course, I should say this is the only CD of his I have other than all the JFish work and the debut Cd from that hard glam pop band he was in after JFish dissolved (forgot their name) - so maybe I'm missing another gem of his!
If you haven't heard it yet, LofPI seems somewhat thematic, Manning reliving his youth, or maybe it is loosely a collection of songs to or about his kids, or their future, or... I don't know, I better listen to the lyrics more closely before I REALLY hang myself out to dry... Musically, Roger channels the songcraft of B Wilson, Burt Bacharach, and RJM Jr hisself, not too unlike Wondermints, Cloud 11, and others in that vein... but IMO he tops his previous output because not only are the melodic and performance chops top notch, but this new disc has more HEART than anything else I've heard him do. ("I Wish It Would Rain", anyone?) Pop for all times.
PS - who decided to put the 3 bonus tracks on a separate CD EP??? These are killer songs! They belong as the last 3 songs on the CD - they fit right after "Appleby", which is certainly charming and endearing but a bit strange to boot and an odd choice for the album closer... I mean, LofPI is the rare CD that I think warrants 14 instead of 10 or 11 tracks... no filler, all killer!
