A good question. Quality depends on the kbps rate with which one rips and
how good the codec (encoder/decoder) is in your ripping software. ITunes is
the best I've heard with the cleanest rips. I've heard MusicMatch rips and I
think they're quite poor. You can hear the compression in the high end.

When comparing quality, I was thinking in terms of the average 128kbps rip.
For the hell of it, let's call 96-128 like a prerecorded cassette and
160-192 like the ones you'd make at home, more or less. And the iTunes
proprietary format AAC is pretty darn clean. An AAC file at 320 sounds
indistinguishable from a CD to my ears.

Remember when you were young and had a prescribed amount of money to spend
on blank tapes (which were not cheap) and you had to search your soul to
decide on whether to by the normal bias or spring for the chromes?!
