Freddy was a longtime favorite of my own late father: his bilingual
version of my dad's favorite country song, "Born To Lose," was a big
turntable hit when I was a little kid, and hearing his albums at an
impressionable age is undoubtedly where I first learned of my love for
conjunto and other musical hybrids of la frontera. Which, now that I
think about it, is itself an early indication of my overall fondness
for musicians who cross genre boundaries...hm, Freddy Fender
eventually led to Beck...
Check out HEARD IT ON THE X by Los Super Seven from a couple years
ago. Freddy only sings here and there (he'd had a more active role in
their earlier albums, but he was already sick by then), but overall,
it's a great appreciation of the old border radio stations.
