Lots of great suggestions so far, so it's hard not to duplicate 'em. Somebody suggested The Old 97's TOO FAR TO CARE, and it's a great choice but my favorite remains the preceding record WRECK YOUR LIFE, which is a just a little less refined and a little bit hotter for it. One band I haven't seen mentioned is the V-Roys, whose debut JUST ADD ICE is arguably the best roots rock record of the 90's, IMO. I can't recommend it too highly. The follow-up ALL ABOUT TOWN is a small step down from that, but certainly worth seeking out. The group broke up after 2 LP's, but one of the group's two writers and front men, Scott Miller, is somebody who deserves your attention and time. His full-band debut as Scott Miller and the Commonwealth, THUS ALWAYS TO TYRANTS, is one of my favorite records of the current decade, and his two records since that are also both well worthwhile (FWIW the V-Roys other writer/singer was Mic Harrison, who went on to join Superdrag for their excellent LAST CALL FOR VITRIOL, and who's since released a fine solo record PALLBEARER'S SHOES). Finally for now, you should certainly check out the works of Walter Clevenger and the Dairy Kings. Since Walter is an Audities guy I won't risk picking a place to start, but really all his records are what you're looking for, and great great stuff.
