I hope somebody here has some insight for me. And I hope the answer
isn't "your computer is hutzed." Although I'm pretty much expecting that
answer.
Got a new laptop last week. HP Pavilion with Centrino Duo. Lots of
memory, etc. Not the top-end deck, but a nice mid-range, and plenty more
powerful than my old machine.
Downloaded latest version of iTunes (7.0.1.8) and transferred all the
music from my old machine via DVD.
Here's the problem - the music is skipping, almost like with a
turntable. I've done what I can to pinpoint the issue:
* I deleted iTunes and did a re-install in case it was a software
install glitch. No change.
* I burned an original disc in case it was something to do with the
DVD transfer process. It skipped, too.
* I downloaded a file in case it was my new machine's CD/DVD drive.
It skips.
* I played some files that skip in iTunes on Windows Media Player.
Of course, this is where we reach the part where you can't
replicate the error with the mechanic watching. So far no skipping
on WMP, but as I run these tests nothing is skipping a lot.
None of these appears to be the issue. All my music files are skipping,
although - and here's the important part - the skipping isn't
consistent. It will skip in a spot, so I'll scroll back and play it
again and it WON'T skip. This seems to indicate that the files are okay.
So do I have a bad sound card? Do I need to rip out iTunes and try again
(I may not have scrubbed it thoroughly enough last time?) Any ideas at all?
Thanks in advance for any help....

"...it's a lonesome thing to be passing small towns
with the lights shining sideways when the night is down,
or going in strange places with a dog nosing before you
and a dog nosing behind, or drawn to the cities where
you'd hear a voice kissing and talking deep love in every
shadow of the ditch, and you passing on with an empty,
hungry stomach failing from your heart."
