It's great to hear these stories of people digging deep into the Nilsson
catalogue. That's exactly what happened to me, I read a couple of great
reviews of Harry's stuff, bought his first 2 albums and then *had* to go out
and buy the whole back catalogue. It's not often that happens.

What an up and down catalogue it is too especially on the post Pussy Cats
albums. As for Pussy Cats, despite quite liking the record it never fails to
break my heart to hear his voice so broken and rough considering how
beautiful it had been on the early albums.

I'm guessing he is not regarded as highly as he deserved because of the
irreverent sense of humour in his records. Not serious/earnest enough to be
accepted into the rock canon. He's also not easily pigeonholed into a
particular genre.

Given the lack of live recordings it's worth keeping an eye out online for
some of his rarities. As mentioned there is the 1971 BBC appearance as well
as one where he sings standards with an orchestra. He also made appearances
on The Ghost and Mrs Muir, Playboy After Dark and the Smothers Brothers.
Best of all there is a whole disk of demos he recorded with Van Dyke Parks
for the Popeye soundtrack that are worth hearing.
