I think this was first posted by Stewart, so I can't speak for the ZipCar 
service in Boston, but in Philadelphia, we have a car share service called, 
originally enough, PhillyCarShare.  It is basically a service that you join 
that lets members use cars for periods of time to run errands (food 
shopping, etc.)  It's a great service for people who don't need to own a 
car, but could use a car every now and then.  It's been pretty successful 
here.  And it really makes a lot of sense for areas with access to other 
forms of transportation.
