A couple of CDs that have recently become available
that might appeal to the list (my apologies if any of
this has been previously discussed and I missed it):
The Flame- s/t. from 1970. Produced by Carl Wilson,
this CD features future Beach Boys Blondie Chaplin and
Ricky Fataar. This CD has not left my player for the
two weeks since I received it. It is very Beatlesque,
with hints of "Magic Christian Music" era
Badfinger/Iveys. Though they probably weren't really
an influence, it sounds like Myracle Brah and Cotton
Mather could have been influenced by The Flame. A
buddy of mine also swears he thinks it sounds like Big
Star...and in parts I can hear things that do sound
like solo Chris Bell. Carl Wilson does an admirable
job producing, unlike some producers (Rundgren/Lynne)
who leave their stamp all over the sound, there is
nary a Beach Boys vibe throughout the entire record to
my ears.
The only song I had previously heard was "Dont Worry
Bill", which appeared in a live version as part of a
medley with "Wonderful" on The Beach Boys "Endless
Harmony" soundtrack.
After listening to this a few times, I wondered why
The Beach Boys didnt ask bassist Brother Fataar to
join as well..he was (he passed away in 1978) a fine
bass player in the McCartney style. You can get this
CD through Deep Discount CD for under $14 with
shipping. I suspect most of the people on this list
will not be disappointed.
I wish do the liner notes were better...Id love to
know who sings what, or if Blondie Chaplin was the
lead singer on all the tracks.
Another couple of CDs I have also found available
that might appeal to the list...a 2fer CD from
Australia available at Amazon.com (and CD Universe) of
Dwight Twilleys first two solo albums, "Twilley" and
"Scuba Divers" for under $20. I have been waiting for
these two albums to be available on CD (legally) for a
long time.
And lastly, it looks like a remastered (w/ 7 bonus
tracks) of Ian Hunters last Mott the Hoople album
"The Hoople" is available.
