Geez, I guess it has been that long. I remember it well, as that was the
year that I first stumbled over Not Lame and all other underground power pop
activities, before I even owned my first computer. I began playing in a
local R&B band which put me in cahoots with my fellow Ooh Frank Huston, and
spent much of the year being flown and bussed around the eastern half of the
U.S. playing rallies for Bob Dole. In our down time, Frank & I started our
writing partnership which blossomed the following year into The Oohs. And
the Dole gigs paid for my first Mac (amongst other things) - every time Bob
said "It's your money," I smiled to myself and said "Damn right, Bob."
I remember getting my original Audities List subscription at work until I
finally got that Mac and switching to my home addy...wow. Being in contact
with a bunch of folks that actually understood much of my own musical
idiosyncracies (unlike my now ex-wife). David Bash & I actually talking on
the phone...tape trees...online friends like Bill Holmes & Marty
Rudnick...online conversations with like-minded musicians like Walter
Clevenger and Robbie Rist...exposure to a world of marvelous (and sometimes
not-so-marvelous) music that I would have otherwise missed in the cultural
wasteland that is central Illinois.
Damn, folks - it has been fun! Here's to another 10 years!
