In my case, it's because I can't stand the sound of lossy
compression, especially at the default level of compression used by
the iPod. I do hear the difference, and I do find it as grating as
fingernails on a chalkboard. There are ways of processing the file
after the fact that can hide a lot of the evidence of lossy
compression, but when you talk about doing the listening on the iPod,
forget it. It hurts my ears.
