To each his own, but I don't get the IPod hate. You don't have to walk
around train stations listening to music to get a lot of value out of it.

On the two vacations the wife and I went on this year we listened to the
IPod during long plane rides. During the vacation we hooked-up our IPod to
speakers and used it as a portable CD player. You can do the same thing in a
car, especially helpful in a rental car. On one vacation we planned theme
nights and put together lists of theme related songs from ITunes without
having to purchase whole albums.

At home we have all of our CD's loaded into ITunes and use the laptop to
play music around the house. ITunes can also turn you on to new music. I'm
not saying that's your best source of finding new music, but it is a source.
It's especially helpful if an old song gets in your head and you want to
download it immediately.

It took me a long time to get a cell phone... now I'm not sure how I lived
without it. I totally understand the argument against it sonically, though
my ears are fried so for me the point is moot. I'm not here to defend the
technology, and if you don't want an MP3 player it makes no nevermind to me.
That said, most of the other arguments I read against it seem curmudgeonly
(as someone over 30 I could care less if people think I look silly with
earphones in or if people talk about me while I listen to music). For me
it's been a great piece of technology.
