Thanks to Mark Hershberger, who Bruce Brodeen also thanked on the Not
Lame site, for discovering the latest release by the Norwegian band
Twinklehead. I am totally loving this release!
In his description of the band, Bruce name-drops Pink Floyd, Alan
Parsons, 10cc, Stealers Wheel, World Party, Badfinger, late 60`s Bee
Gees, Moody Blues and a couple of others. If that sounds like a weird
stew of band influences, please don't let it stop you from checking out
the sound samples. Vocally it reminds me of America in some spots and
even Porcupine Tree on a track or two. There are some swirling vocals
and layered harmonies to go along with an early '70s vibe.
In the same package from NL, I also got the new Roger Manning. Yes, I'm
late to the party, but I didn't want to drop the dough on the Japanese
release knowing there'd be a domestic in just a few months. I'd heard a
couple of tracks from Weed, but wanted to save some of the sonic
surprises for the proper release. "The Land of Pure Imagination" is a
soft-pop masterpiece! Imagine if Jellyfish re-formed with Neil Sedaka
and Burt Bacharach as members. Maybe throw in a little Gimbel & Fox,
too. Some of you may cringe at that, but Roger Manning, Sedaka and
Bacharach all love melody--- and Roger has drenched this release in very
poppy meoldies while stacking vocals to the rafters. This old goat is
really digging it.
These will both rank very high on my year-end list.
Bing on L.E.O. !!!
