The Pipettes album has been available in the States for at least a
couple of months now; the copies I've been seeing may simply be UK
imports, though it was on sale for $10.99 at Newbury Comics a couple
weeks ago. The album's also available on eMusic for anyone who's
interested. I quite like it: it's basically a cross between early
Bananarama (the vocals and the overall persona), late '80s UK indie
groups like Talulah Gosh or the Shop Assistants (the kind of
punky-bratty lyrical thrust and DIY feel), and the Go! Team, with whom
they're vaguely associated. Interestingly, both my U.K. friend who
first hipped them to me and my local friend whom I hipped (and who
thinks they're the best band he's heard in at least months, if not
years) also made the same obscure comparison, to an all-but-forgotten
mid-'90s UK dance-pop duo called Alisha's Attic; they don't know each
other, and I think it's kind of fascinating that they both landed on
that comparison, although I don't personally hear it much.
