IPO Vancouver is now over so let me catch you up with the who & what of
the last two performances. My wrapup report will appear tomorrow.
Day 3 was Bongo Beat & Bullseye night. I was really hoping Jamie would
have made the trip but that was not to be. Those Big Smoke fancypants...
regards, Judith
RALPH www.bongobeat.com
Has it really been seventeen years since Ralph, the man, began Ralph,
the zine? In the blink of an eye. There I was seemingly "manning" the
merch table, yet really years away revisiting my late 20's reading the
collected Ralph pamphlets (orig hand cranked on an ancient gestetner) in
book form. Reading Ralph's heartbreaks, dates, musical tips it all came
rushing back (in a loosey-goosey beat sorta way 'course) as those were
*my* heartbreaks (or so one felt reading Ralph).
Ralph's band this night included Kevin Kane and Dave Rave. Ralph
musically backed spoken poetics focused on old friendships and his 1979
UK visit which included "ghosts on Carnaby street."
KEVIN HOUSE www.kevinhouse.ca
Ever wonder what (Nancy's) Sluggo did when he grew up? Now ya know.
Kevin lives in my 'hood and his style is hobo-chic (janitor/grandpa
pants, shapeless blazers, plaid shirts, depression era cap). Oops, it's
supposed to be about the music right? 'kay.
Picture a less debauched Johnny Dowd with Mark Eitzels voice. Kevin
played solo on friday. His second release on Bongo Beat is coming out
next year. Hop over to Kevin's site and check out his amazing artwork.
I'll wait. His music is ace but his banner creations...whoa!
GEOFF GIBBONS www.myspace.com/geoffgibbons
You know when you walk into a room and bing you can 'spot the muso'?
That's what I felt when I arrived at the club and saw Geoff. He had that
presence. First impression, cuter -- a bit like Tom Petty's separated at
birth kin -- than his Bullseye promo pic and that's because, oh what the
heck, I interrupt this review for a wee rant: here's the truth, pay
attention people, round glasses just don't work. They didn't work on
John Lennon and they don't work on Geoff and they won't work for you.
There are much better frame shapes out there.
Anyhoo, Geoff was a member of SILVERLODE a Vancouver based soft pop duo
a la Seals & Croft. Alas, I can't recall a single song but if I heard
one I'd probably go instantly recognize. Geoff's set was pleasant pop, I
especially enjoyed the few songs that had a dusty Eagles feel.
DEE LONG
Highlight of the night! Knowing nothing of Klaatu's music yet certainly
aware of their history I was intrigued to see what would transpire. When
Dee and his bass player went on stage and said the drummer couldn't make
it and we would have to settle for canned drumz I was dubious.
First song a silly bit about the merits of pasta over rice...totally
cringeworthy. My expectations dropped another notch. Then came the
proggy space rock that kicked like a mule. Excellente!
A strong contingent of fans from Lillooet BC had me puzzled until I
remembered Dee lives in that nice town, hot & dry semi desert, 3 hours
from Vancouver.
CINDERPOP
First time to see these guys (and gal on keyboards) who have been around
for ages. Kevan on lead vox has a distinctive voice, sounding rather
like a twee yet manly baby doll (that's no putdown). Very original.
Second highlight!
ORCHID HIGHWAY
Aw nuts. I tried my best to stick with it, but I had to pack it in and
miss Orchid Highway. It was late and I was sleepy as heck. Wimpy Jude.
