The second day at IPO Vancouver. Friends, the weather here has been very
nice this week, cool in the evening (starting to dig out the Fall
bedding) and sunny warm during the day. Late August and early September
are often the nicest times to visit here.
Here are my thoughts on what transpired last night. Did I mention I'm a
hard rock heathen?
regards, Judith

LAURA SMITH www.myspace.com/laurasmithmusic
The festivities got off with a 1-2 punch of lady driven snooze pop. One
group guitar based the other piano each way too mellow for me. Next!
CONE OF SILENCE www.myspace.com/conesonmelograph
Now we're talkin'! Just great and if I really like it most of you will
love'em. Great presence and first rickenbacker of the evening. Quite
reminded me of The Roswells (more on them in a jiffy) XTC cover, too.
Oh yeah lest I forget Cone of Silence got to play some extra songs
because the band VILOT (sic) never showed up. That is just crazy and
extremely un-Canadian behaviour.
CHERELLE JARDINE www.cherellejardine.com/
Biker pop anyone? Cherelle's guitarist is from Stonebolt a real
headscratcher of a Canuck band from the mid 70's who had a tuff
(compared to 'tough') sort of image yet hit-after-hit of am-radio pap
like "I will still love you" (played at many a wedding fer sure). Gah.
Anyhoo, Cherelle's set was a-ok and included a cover of "Magic Man" from
her touring buddies Heart. It was heartwarming to talk to Cherelle's
husband who doth burst with pride over his bride.
THE TOMORROWS
Oh boy! The Tomorrows are Scott & Marc from THE ROSWELLS with pals from
Orchid Highway (drumz) and Winston (bass). They've got an album in "the
can" as they say and let the bidding wars begin.
Highlight of the night for me next to Cone Of Silence. Scott just
resonates young John Lennon in sound & especially looks. Marc will
surely play the lead role if the Carmine Appice story is ever filmed.
A bit crunchier than their previous work. Some of the song titles appear
to be "jupiter optimus maximus" "better man" and "love is dead" (which
ends off with the optimistic refrain 'long live love.'
The Tomorrows finished their set with a cover that seemed vaguely
familiar to me. It was apparently by The Beatles had the lyric "you
can't get me" from Revolver? I had to ask someone.
EDMONTON BLOCK HEATER myspace.com/edmontonblockheater
...are a Vancouver based band! Tres confusing I know. The trio are hard
to peg and I'm not going to do them justice at the moment. Definitely
not pop, but that's now so awful is it <grin>?
