So there I was at IPO Vancouver literally front row (if not center) in
charge of the merch table. I only had two pints of beer so fulfilled my
"don't get tipsy" pledge. Great to see Maestro Bash again and be part of
the festivities!
Here are my thoughts on what transpired last night.
IRISES * JOHN HOSKINSON http://www.theirises.com/news.htm
http://www.johnhoskinson.com/
David's intro described show the Irises and John met in LA at an IPO and
have been performing together since. Vancouver's Irises feat Stephen
Quinn (ex-Go For Three, Thrill Squad) on guitar (no longer Roxanne on
vox). Good stuff with strongest tuneage from John's CD "Miscellaneous
Heathen" which got 4 stars from Uncut who thought it was "the missing
link between Rubber Soul and Emmitt Rhodes.
LAST DAY LOST http://www.myspace.com/lastdaylost
Wow! Two guys two gals. Related? Super cute and very young (sub 20). I
was preparing for the worst and got some of the nights best. The
highlight of the band is the female guitarist (pixie short in height
she'll likely grow more) who just wails on succinct, spare lead guitar.
The tiny little platform our gtr heroine jumped on is the best thing
ever. Maybe she felt it was overkill to do this more than once at the
Railway but I wish she'd done it more. Rawk.
DANNY ECHO http://www.myspace.com/dannyecho
Danny is a real sweetie, think a Canuck Jim Basnight with a bit less sex
on his mind and the same tongue-in-cheek cheese factor. Cowboy hat pop.
Dan gave me some CD's from his old band Ryecatchers to give away (classy).
BROKEN CONDOM BABIES http://www.myspace.com/brokencondombabies
David raved about the band's name...he really liked it! Ewww. So silly
on too many levels. More on the rocky-pop side.
ETWINZ http://www.myspace.com/etwinzmusic
This was not for me. Singer guy wore a priest-shirt which was highlight
of set. Scarily emotive commercial rock about girls who lie and don't
like the singer.
SAVILE ROW http://www.myspace.com/savilerow
Highlight of the night! Brit pop meets creative 70's art rock with
triple guitar attack. Strong posse of pals. Great fun.
ROCKY JR www.rockyjr.com
Omigosh, Rocky Jr is one sexy little cholo (complete with wifebeater &
tattoo) and leads his trio with his blues guitar chops to spare. Think
Prince meets um, I dunno Marc Bolan? Nah, I wish and that's cos of the
hair. Prince meets a bluesy jam band for sure. Last of the night.
