I have some really fond memories of the Strawberries store that opened on
Route 44 in Avon, Conn. c. 1982-83, when I was a mere lad of 12 or 13. In
the summer of 1986, when my musical curiosity really flowered, I spent hours
in that store browsing through the bins. Purchases that immediately come to
mind are the first BoDeans record, PIL's "This is What You Want, This Is
What You Get," Madness' s/t U.S. release with "It Must Be Love," and "Our
House" on it, and The dB's "Like This."
Almost all were on cassette, though I did buy more than my fair share of
vinyl there.
The last time I was home, which was two years ago, the store was still open
and was moving along quite briskly despite the fact that a larger Borders
had opened across the street in what used to be the Farmington Valley Mall.
As a side note, some of the most adventurous musical purchases I ever made
were from a Caldor department store in Torrington, Conn. (Mike Barone and I
have talked about this before). For whatever reason, the buyers had the
broadest taste. I remember buying The Jam's "Snap" as well as U2's "Under a
Blood Red Sky" there and being suprised they were in the racks amidst all
the Top 40 and 70s rock.
