"Is Rolling Stone still around? While not a chain, it is one of the
better known indie single stores in the country (maybe not as high
profile as Austin's Waterloo, but not far behind)."

I'm still recovering from their switch from vinyl to CDs in '89! I used
to love to go in and browse the $5 bargain bin in front while
surreptitiously checking out the checkout girls.
Most of my vinyl is from that store and many was the band that I'd never
heard of before walking in becoming one of my favorites later on.

I do drop in once in awhile when I'm in the neighborhood but either my
musical taste has ossified (which is very possible, if you believe this
story: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5652676), or
their selection has really suffered. Still, they're one of the last
independent record stores left and I hope it never disappears. If
nothing else, it's fun to try to identify the bands in the paintings on
the building.

Bill
