Scritti Politti is one of my favorite bands ever. From the eclectic
techno-pop of "Cupid & Psyche" to the vastly underrated hip-hop-pop of
"Anomie & Bonhomie", I've been devoted to the musical stylings of Green
Gartside and his rotating band of musicians since my first year in college.
I spent a lot of time and energy tracking down the two one-off Scritti CD
singles, as well as the "British Electric Foundation Vol. 2" compilation
with Green covering "I Don't Know Why I Love You". (Almost broke up with a
girlfriend over that CD, but that's another story entirely...) I love
Scritti to death, and still listen to them all the time. In fact, a CD-R
filled with MP3s of all their tunes is currently in my car's disc changer.

So, having said that...

I just listened to the samples, and... I dunno. A *lot* of slow, smooth
tunes... maybe too many and too smooth for my tastes. It's almost like the
fire's gone out of Green's belly. "Dr. Abernathy" has some pep, and
"Cooking" almost sounds like it could have come off of Andy Partridge's
"Fuzzy Warbles" series, but all the others seem very tame. I mean, musically
they're very interesting - this quiet, soft-synth stuff is new territory for
Green - but the songs themselves don't have much

I'll certainly be picking this up (domestic US release on July 25th), 'cause
I'm a fan (see above), but I'm wondering how much replay this entire disc
will get. Still, I'm glad Green didn't wait 11 years to release this disc
like he did "Anomie". No, this time it was a short 7 years...
