I think it's a real shame that it's being cancelled but it's been
marginalised by the BBC for years. They mucked with the format diminishing
it's popularity, this led to falling ratings so they moved it to a different
time slot and this inevitably eroded the audience more.
And this "Increased use of iPods, the rise of 24-hour music TV channels and
the
splintering of music markets into different genres has diminished interest
in the show." is complete nonsense. Why would iPods have a bearing on the
popularity of a TV show? There have been 24 hour music channels for 25 years
so that's no reason although I'll admit it would have some bearing on a
falling audience but not suddenly now.
If anything this is the result of a time 10 years agowhen the single became
devalued and record companies released records in such a way that songs
never climbed but rocketed in high to the charts and then fell off. I would
have said though that if anything, downloads (if you like, iPods) have
increased the popularity of the single track making the charts more
interesting and leading to songs actually climbing the charts or hanging
round longer than 2 weeks. This should have had a positive impact on TOTP.
