I picked up the latest David Mead "Tangerine" cd used.Had heard about him
through the years, but never tried any of stuff. And boy is this ever one of
the year's very best so far.To help it sounds terriffic.Produced by Brad
Jones who does all the swell Swan Dive recordings and done at the same
studio.That was an unexpected treat.But those songs.What a treat.A bit of
folk,a little country, all with a pop sheen and some tin pan alley. The whole
thing works, but "The trouble with Harry"and "Chatterbox" stand out.But the
one stuck in my head while picking out strawberries at the grocery store was
" Sugar on the knee".Just a honey of a tune. And the album concludes with the
majestic "Choosing Teams" evoking a great Southern charm. All sung sweetly
with a great falsetto and enhanced by piano, vibes, glockenspiel, and string
sections.I am suddenly a huge fan.
The other strong contender for a year b/o is the new Jules Shear, "Dreams
don't count".I am already a Jules "freak" but he really put out a decent
effort here.It a laid back and somber ciollection but the songs shine
through. With just guitar, accordion, cello, and viola and occasional horns to
paint, but it is Jules show all the way.The first 2 songs set the pace, with
"I want to fall" a classic marriage of words and melody Jules style.
" I want to fall
But I don't want to land
Restless in the afternoon
craxy through the night....".
My favorite is "Sinners who Believed", a minor key failed romance
beauty. And you gotta like a song called "Accustomed to the Clearness".
"I'm not accustomed to the clearness
when I am standing here facing you..."
The album ends with the title song and it is as sad as it sounds. But Jules
is still making vital music and that is great news to fans.
Both of these have been playing a lot lately in my jukebox.
