Earlier, as The Dictators' "Who Will Save Rock 'n' Roll?" was running through
my head, I was once again struck by the brilliance of these lines:
June 1st, '67
Somethin' died and went to Heaven
I wish Sgt. Pepper never taught the band to play
Agree or disagree, it's a well-phrased rock-crit screed, worthy of Creem
Magazine and set to music. (It's also a worthy descendant of Segarini's "I loved
The Beatles up to Sgt. Pepper/Then they ruined pop for what could be
forever.") And I started to wonder if anyone else had any other cool examples of
song lyrics doubling as snarky put-downs of specific records or recording
artists.
A couple more came to mind:
EYTAN MIRSKY: "When I did a quick inspection and found your ELO/I told you
to take your record collection, baby, and go" ["Record Collection"]
TOO MUCH JOY: "Every great band should be shot/Before they make their
Combat Rock" [don't recall the specific song]
THE dB's: "I don't like The Association" (okay, that one's cheating)
["Spitting In The Wind"]
But there must be more....
