Well, a bunch of fiddlers could make it country or folk (think "Fiddle
Fever"/Jay Ungar), but when I hear a string section on top of a trap
set and acoustic/electric guitars I think of pop music inspired by the
Drifters. The particular cut I heard made me think of "Fields of Grey"
by Bruce Hornsby, although technically I think Hornsby only used a
quartet. It's hard to toss things into genres these days... for
example, I still think of Mark Knopfler as a rock guitarist, but he
has done a bunch of stuff which has put him into folk and country bins
in some stores! Then again, this is only what I think of -- what it
reminds me of has nothing to do with what section of the record store
it will be in.
I think strings add a great texture to some electric/acoustic songs
(and some jazz records, a la Chet Baker and Clifford Brown), but at
this point I wouldn't label the Dixie Chicks country -- I'm put them
in the Pop bins.
Then again, I have a hard time categorizing things ... my collection
at home is simply organized as "Jazz," "Classical," and "Everything
Else."
