People should keep in mind that there is a very wide range in the quality of
the encoders, and knowing how to use a particular encoder properly makes a
large difference. People can get a much worse impression of mp3 by
listening to poorly encoded 128 files from web sites. It is worth it so
search around and read some of the double blind encoding tests which tell
you the proper settings for the quality to be (more) acceptable.
It the least, for iPod, the AAC lossless encoding talked about in an earlier
post is very good. A decent reduction in size, and I think it is easier on
the battery than wav files, and the file can be returned to and exact
duplicate of the wav file it came from. Even after being sent through
AirPort express wirelessly.
Another note, AAC and WAV will kill an iPod battery much quicker than
smaller files due to the amount of hard drive activity required.
