Without question, for me it'd be Bill Yerger at Mainstreet Records in
Brockport, NY. Bill was a true believer, and a polite e-mail is too small a forum
for me to list the many great records I bought from Bill when I lived in
Brockport ('77-'82), both from when he was managing The Record Grove and then when
he opened Mainstreet. Prices were impossibly low, selection was tremendous,
and the atmosphere...well, just calling it congenial doesn't even begin to do
it justice. Bill and his wife Carol were always friendly (even when she was
mortified to learn that my favorite Beach Boys track at the time was "Sloop John
B"), always willing to chat, always eager to point out new stuff of interest.
Along with Record Revolution in Cleveland Heights, Mainstreet Records will
always remain in my memory as my favorite record shop.
(Oh, and the above-mentioned long list would include The Romantics'
first indie single "Little White Lies," my first Ramones records [the "Sheena" 45
and the first LP], The Runaways, The Flamin' Groovies, The Pleasers, The
Chesterfield Kings, Blondie, "God Save The Queen," Radio Birdman, The Jam, New
Math, The Barracudas [and lots of other Voxx releases], The Rollers' RICOCHET LP,
the 2-LP MONKEEMANIA collection from Australia [the liner notes of which
captivated me endlessly, and which Bill let me read on several visits to the store
while I saved up the money to buy the damn thing....])
