I'm trying to think of any really spectacularly rude record store
clerks I've ever dealt with, and I don't think I've ever run across
anyone who was just spectacularly awful. I've seen plenty of bad
behavior in record stores, of course (I once saw the owner of a store
threaten to fire the entire staff because someone had priced a copy of
Marshall Crenshaw's debut single -- which I was buying -- at $1.95,
not knowing how rare it was), but I prefer to think of record store
clerks in terms of the guys at Bow Wow Records in Albuquerque, who
were a non-stop source of information, bad jokes and gossip. Special
props should be given to the guy who would let me pile a stack of LPs
between 12 and 24 inches high on the counter, flick through to cull
out the three or four particularly rare/expensive items, and then
quote me a price of twenty or thirty bucks for the rest.
